Merrie Melodies is a series of animated screwball comedy theatrical shorts that ran from 1931 to 1969, then sporadically from 1979 to 1997. It was produced and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Acting as a sister series to Looney Tunes, the shorts were initially produced by Leon Schlesinger and animators Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising until 1933. Schlesinger assumed full production under Leon Schlesinger Productions from 1933 until 1944, after which he sold it to Warner Bros. and renamed to Warner Bros. Cartoons.
Like Looney Tunes, the series played an important part in forming what would become known as the Golden Age of animation. It was responsible for developing and/or creating such memorable characters as Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam, Sylvester, Tweety, Granny, the Tasmanian Devil, Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, Pepé Le Pew, Foghorn Leghorn, Speedy Gonzales; and last but certainly not least, Bugs Bunny.
Between 2011 to 2014, Cartoon Network aired The Looney Tunes Show, a modernized reboot of the Looney Tunes theatrical shorts in which the characters live in a suburban setting and have working jobs. In-between the half hour episodes, the characters were featured in their own musical numbers under the Merrie Melodies name.
