Release

Dates are in order of release:

  • United States: August 31, 1957 in theatres

Behind the scenes

  • The title is a pun on the duo "Rocky and Mugsy."
  • This short shares similarities with Merrie Melodies short Stooge for a Mouse, which Freleng also directed:
    • A scene where Mike tells Sylvester, "I don't know how youse done it, but I know youse done it!", is lifted from the earlier short, but with Rocky and Mugsy instead, respectively.
  • Similar to the mouse in the earlier short, Bugs uses a magnet to make it look like Mugsy is fighting Rocky.

Errors

  • Bugs' size changes throughout the short; outside his hole, he is normal-sized, but inside, he is the size of a mouse as indicated by the size of the magnet he is holding near the end of it.
  • When Bugs gives Mugsy the saw, he has yellow hair, as it was revealed when Rocky used a cleaver to chop his newsie cap in half. When Rocky goes to yell at him, his hair matches the color of his skin.

Legacy

  • In the video game Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time, the stage "The Greatest Escape" is inspired by this cartoon, with Bugs navigating through an abandoned hotel like the one from this short.
  • Some special attacks used for both Rocky and Mugsy in the video game, Looney Tunes: World of Mayhem, involved scenes from this cartoon.
  • DePatie-Freleng Enterprises reused some plot elements for a Dogfather cartoon. Heist and Seek.
