Charlie Dog is an anthropomorphic dog and a recurring character in the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies theatrical shorts. He is often portrayed as a sly, friendly canine who attempts to use his clever disposition to have someone adopt him. His voice was originated by Mel Blanc.
A prototype of the character appeared in the 1941 Bob Clampett short Porky's Pooch, which followed a similar formula of a homeless dog wanting to have a owner. Charlie officially made his debut in the 1947 short Little Orphan Airedale, directed by Chuck Jones, who finalized his character. He appeared in a total of five shorts during the Golden Age (not counting his prototype in Porky's Pooch), three of which co-star Porky Pig as his second banana.
Character description
