Barnyard Dawg[Note 1] is an anthropomorphic Basset Hound and character in the Looney Tunes animated franchise. He often appears in cartoons starring Foghorn Leghorn, where he is cast as a rival to Foghorn, in addition to Henery Hawk. His voice was originated by Mel Blanc.

Character description

In the Foghorn Leghorn shorts, Barnyard lives in a doghouse and primarily keeps himself busy on keeping order on the farm. He usually serves as an arch enemy of Foghorn Leghorn, as the two spend their lives setting pranks to one another, and Barnyard serves as the straight man to the Foghorn's teases and taunts. In a moment where Foghorn tries to take charge, he gets involved in ridiculous situations. However, Barnyard gains the upper hand and ends up outsmarting Foghorn, mainly with a practical joke or by manipulating Henery Hawk. Barnyard is often portrayed as an exasperated, yet good-natured and laid-back character. He exhibits a gruff, no-nonsense attitude that contrasts Foghorn's loud personality.

As part of a recurring gag, Barnyard is usually seen sleeping in his doghouse at the beginning of a short, only to get interrupted by Foghorn and slapped his hindquarters with a wooden fencepost repeatedly. In other instances, Foghorn would taunt him while tied next to his doghouse, only for him to get caught by his pranks. More often or not, Foghorn would also shut up Barnyard when he barks continuously.

Barnyard is a bipedal Basset Hound with a primary white fur coat and brown markings. He speaks in a New York accent.
