An anvil is a tool consisting of large block of metal, often used as a workbench to hammer and shape hot metal, of which they are struck or "worked." There are used as a forging tool by blacksmiths in most cases.

In the Looney Tunes franchise, they are commonly used as a prop for gags, usually a stand-in metaphor for a heavy and clumsy object.

  • In the Gilmore Girls episode "Tick, Tick, Tick, Boom," Lorelai has a discussion at dinner about the use of anvils in cartoons and where did they go. She then adds the must have been common because Wile E. Coyote had them, which soon becomes a seemingly pointless conversation about the Road Runner, with Richard and Rory joining the topic.
