Oswald Awards
The Oswald Awards is a cartoon-themed award ceremony created by Friz Freleng, and held in Hollywood, California.
It was featured as part of the third act of The Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie.
History
Creation
The awards was conceived when Bugs Bunny protested to Friz about not having having a ceremony for animated cartoon characters. To show gratitude towards the rabbit, Freleng created the ceremony and made him the host of it, of which Bugs would hand over an award to any cartoon character who "helped out the most."
Ceremony
During the red carpet opening ceremony, a dimwitted news reporter dog interviews some of the guests attending the Oswald Awards. One the guests who appeared are Pepé Le Pew (whose scent drives off the crowd), Porky Pig and his cousins, the Three Little Bops & the Big Bad Wolf, and Foghorn Leghorn, the latter of whom does a small chorus kick number upon arrival. Soon enough, Yosemite Sam, Tweety and Sylvester arrive at the red carpet. Daffy Duck also makes his own entrance, but the crowd reacts more highly to Bugs Bunny, who arrives in time to host the ceremony, much to Daffy's envy.
At the start of the ceremony, Bugs presents the first two nominations: the Three Little Bops & the Big Bad Wolf, and Tweety & Sylvester. He also shows the cartoons they starred in: Three Little Bops and Birds Anonymous. But the third nominee came to as a surprise for Bugs, for the nominee is himself, which Daffy protests. He then presents a screening off one of his cartoons, High Diving Hare, despite Daffy's infuriated rantings. Bugs gets embarrassed to find out who it was that won, following the screening of that cartoon, prompting Daffy to go on stage and read the winner's name himself. Much to his shock, however, Daffy finds that the winner of the Oswald Award was Bugs Bunny.
Before Bugs could accept the award, Daffy calls out Bugs and challenges him to a showbiz contest and see who the audience prefers. For most of the challenge, the audience goes in Bugs' favor. Following a series of vaudevillian stage acts that resulted in Daffy trying to do him in, the duck decides to try one last act to win over the audience by blowing himself up in a lethal stunt. The audience applauds for Daffy following this, which Bugs applauds. As the awards came to a close, Daffy exclaims, "It just goes to show that ya. You gotta kill yourself to win an Oswald in this town!"
